Education about Sustainable Waste Management in Lambeth (WREF Grant Awarded: £25K)

This project brought 800 children from primary and secondary school groups to Vauxhall City farm to learn about waste minimisation in a hands-on practical way.

Key aims of the project included:
- Meeting a need from schools in the local area for out of school workshops, clubs and activities based around waste minimisation and linked to the National Curriculum.
- Working with other waste minimisation groups including Rethink Rubbish Western Riverside to deliver a comprehensive waste minimisation education service in the area.
- Helping schools deliver their own waste minimisation systems
- Providing local people with waste minimisation workshops and involving volunteers in the project who will develop transferable skills.

WRWA Estates Inventory (WREF Grant Awarded: £24,824)

This was a pilot waste characterisation project for the Western Riverside area. The project provided up to date research into the composition of household waste and recyclables in the 4 boroughs. This research provides a platform for practical and realistic planning for sustainable waste management. A significant barrier to introducing and improving the performance of estates recycling schemes is the lack of baseline information held by the councils on estate properties. Therefore the objective of this project is to undertake a detailed inventory of private and council owned estate properties across the WRWA region.

The data from this project will significantly improve the ability of borough recycling officers to:
- Assess estates on an individual basis to identify opportunities for increasing capture and participation
- Target priority buildings for implementing recycling programs
- Assess the performance of existing recycling systems
- link estates recycling best practice approaches to the existing refuse handling system
- identify potential sites for locating recycling facilities

The project will be managed by the Recycle Western Riverside (RWR) Campaign team (London Remade and Waste Watch).

Sustainable Environmental Project (WREF Grant Awarded: £18,100)

An ongoing sustainable waste mangement education programme for schools and their wider communities. The WREF funding provides a full time dedicated post to support the project. The Sustainable Environment Project, in partnership with various organisations will support volunteers to continue and enhance composting and recycling activities and deliver sustainable green space development and management on Waterloo Millennium Green.

To achieve this the project will consist of:
- Setting up a composting site on Waterloo Millenium Green
- D
eveloping the composting activities into other projects by promoting good waste management
- Several education and interactive events to demonstrate and promote composting, recycling and reuse.
- Reusing and recycling materials for environment clubs, site management and other projects.
